Chapter 9 Case Study Questions
This activity contains 5 questions.
Is the Patient First?
A rehabilitation hospital wants to implement a patient-centered approach. The chief
executive officer has requested this change after reviewing the Institute of Medicine
reports on quality and healthcare professions. The senior management team has just
concluded a meeting discussing this topic. The hospital has many patients with chronic
illnesses and disabilities. These patients are often referred to the rehab hospital after acute
care and stay long periods of time for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing
care. The hospital looks like a typical hospital with little personal features. Visiting hours
tend to be regulated with staff members saying that they want patients to focus on their
treatment. Considering the content in this chapter and earlier chapters on change and
organizations, what would you recommend as chief nursing executive to respond to this
directive?
1.
What does patient-centered care mean?
2.
Identify strategies that this organization could take to implement a patient-centered
approach.
3.
How might patient-centered care impact nursing care in this hospital? How might patient-
centered care impact other services?
4.
How might the hospital use its consumers (patients and families) in this change process?
5.
You recommend that the hospital use clinical pathways. Why would this recommendation
be connected with patient-centered care?
